I can't see the point of swearing on a Creatures site, when could the need ever arise? Anyway, made-up or olde-times swearwords are funnier dagnammit!

This is just a guess, but from my experience the word most people hate (especially women) rhymes with shunt, and I really can't ever imagine a need to use that word here, ever.

Look at the comments for this video (but don't watch the video). I don't want this board to end up like this, even though I sincerely doubt that would be so, no?

fair enough, though I find the word in question to be considered much milder here in england than elsewhere. I can think of much worse words.

using swear words does not automatically equate to being a troll, you know.

That's not it.
Lets just say it's a racist term, and one with a lot of history behind it. Although that warning applies to all racist swear words. And I'd really like to believe that no one here will ever feel the need to use them.

Yeah. Under NO circumstance should THAT word be said.

I hate censorship. But that along with homophobic remarks are censored. Along with the word that rhymes with shunt. :p Usually.

Yes, I know, but they use it A LOT, which bugs me. I'm sorry, I'm just appalled at such language being used too much.

Personally, I don't care about swearing in general. That being said, I disagree with some of the reasons folks are saying it should be allowed.

We don't need it. It doesn't make what you post any more meaningful, and can actually detract from the message you are trying to send. I understand that cursing can convey strong emotion, particularly frustration or anger, but there are other more creative ways to do that.

It's also hard to decide what words should be permitted and what shouldn't. Some might find certain words more or less offensive than others.

If you feel the need to swear I recommend you take the advice of Spook, 3kul and others and make up your own curses to fufil the purpose. It's not actually against the forum rules to swear and if it's also funny then all the better.

Oh Shyke, for Gai's sake, what the HELK?? Gai dramit.

The above is the result of many years spent on forums with word censors.

As long as the word filter lets you guess what the word was, I'm okay with it. I'm already so used to it I permanently use "drat", "darn", "heck", etc... Although I find the last one unneeded, sometimes "hell" is meant literally in RPs :)

I like to think were all civilized connoisseurs of our wonderfully peaceful artificial life game here. Opinions regarding the issues presented in such a game are hardly something to declare war over and if they are then we can do it in an adult fashion using rhetoric reasoning and respecting others choices. If you find yourself heated up about it go stare at the C2 waterfall for a while. In my mind Creatures and flaming internet war-hell just don't relate.

A forum I go to once used the word filters to replace common swear words with the names of fruits. Certainly takes anything offensive out of your angry rants when it contains lines like, "what the apple papaya is this grape?!"

The fact that a kid will "learn it eventually anyways" means nothing when you realize that it's ultimately the kid's parents who actually decide whether they can join a forum or not. If their parents don't happen to want their child learning those words, the kid doesn't get to share their love for the game with other people who have the same interest in it--which is what happened to me. If somebody had just been willing to set up a kid-friendly forum, or a kid-friendly section of a forum, and keep it kid-friendly, I would have already been part of the community way back then, but because the more grown-up members of the community were too focused on their own "right to speak foully", I missed out on a lot of really neat stuff which is completely gone now. I generally vote for keeping a site clean because of that. Swearing is superficial. It isn't a necessary part of life--I myself don't swear, period, nor do I regret the decision not to--and while some people may think it's great fun to do it, all it really accomplishes is to alienate the other part of the fanbase.

The way I see it, some kids already won't be allowed to visit a PG-rated forum, because it isn't strictly G rated, which is their parents' level of tolerance. Some kids are still allowed to visit it, but only because it's PG rated, as opposed to PG-13. When members decide they want it to be PG-13, it becomes inaccessible for those kids too. Some may still be allowed to visit, because their parents only care so long as it isn't rated R, but how long will that even last? I say this because I've seen it happen before. I personally left a forum because the rating kept increasing, and I didn't want to have to put up with other members' foul mouths and lude comments. Who knows but it's probably rated X by now.

Anyway. Just my thoughts. Personally, I dislike swearing and the general inconsideracy people seem to have for one another when it comes to potentially offensive language.

Honestly, I don't think there should be a censor. I swear like a sailor myself, but I think it would give the CC some bragging rights to be able to say that their forum has no censor, but people can control themselves to the extent that none is needed. Haven't seen a forum like that in ages.

If we were to abide by that logic punchcar5 then we might as well go all the way and offer links to hardcore pornography. They'll learn it sooner or later, right? :P

I can't think of much to say that Ghosthande didn't cover. Creaturetopia is meant to be a site for all ages, having to get a little creative with swear words is a small price to pay.

Honestly, I'm not always a big fan of the word censor, but unfortunately for everybody opposed to it DP is, and as long as he's in charge I can't imagine it going anywhere. Feel free to form an underground movement in the hopes of overthrowing his totalitarian regime, if you think that might help.
